The Institute undertakes operational research in the management of development interventions. The Institute is interested and active in developing and evaluating alternative management strategies and contributing to the development of skills for better management of Development Sector. The Institute specializes in designing and implementing improved management systems to increase the efficiency, quality and effectiveness of development departments. 

         

            The Institute has already facilitated a number of development interventions in the areas such as Public Heath, Nutrition, Health and Hygiene, Rural Development, Agricultural Development, and Organizational Development.

Action Research & Development Interventions

1.

Operational Research Interventions for Reducing Maternal Morbidity & Mortality in MP:-

This project was sponsored by DANIDA supported MP Basic Health Project-III. In this project we first assessed the causes associated with maternal morbidity & mortality in District Rajgarh in MP. A scientific study was designed in two parts. First part was the retrospective study of maternal deaths. The verbal autopsy of the family members was carried out to know the possible causes as retrospective study. The roles of different stake holders were identified and the action points were summarized. In the second part it was the prospective study where all the pregnant cases were registered & the data pertaining to prenatal, natal & post natal were collected. In the event of death of any  of the registered case we had adequate & accurate data to assess the causes of death. These findings were used to sensitize the PRI members. They were then asked to find out the solutions for the causative factors. The action plans to resist the same were drawn by them only. Which has ensured their commitment for implementation. Here our approach was IIDM model of empowerment. (Year 2003-2004).

Total Sanitation Campaign Interventions in 30 villages in Berasia Block of district Bhopal in MP:-

This project was sponsored by Department of Public Health Engineering, Govt. of MP under TSC Scheme of Govt. of India. The main focus in this project was to motivate community for safe drinking water, sanitary living practices, health & hygiene issues in the personal & village environment. The awareness creation & motivating interventions were the tools to mobilize the community. Here our approach was IIDM model of empowerment. We have designed the training pedagogy, course material, training aids & finally facilitated the process. We carried out capacity building interventions for the community & school teachers, AWWs & ANMs in the project area. (Year-2004-05).

WATSAN Project :-

This project was sponsored by UNICEF with funds from SIDA & DFID. It's a 3 year project aimed at mobilizing community for health & hygiene, safe water & sanitation practices in 198 villages of 81 panchayats in Nasrullaganj block of District Sehore. This was planned to be achieved by creating awareness & involving the community for identification of their needs & finding the solutions by using IIDM model of empowerment. Empowering school system in creating awareness and influencing the behavior change for health, hygiene & sanitary practices was an innovative model. (Year 1999- 2002).

Maternal & Infant Survival Project:-

This project was sponsored by CARE-MP with funding support from CIDA. It's a 3 year project covering 45 villages of Timarni block of Harda District in MP. The project aimed at reducing maternal & infant mortality by providing nutritional inputs & better capacity utilization of the health facilities of Dept. of Women & Child Development and Dept. of Public Health & Family Welfare Govt. of MP. This was achieved by creating awareness & involving the community for identification of their needs & facilitating to find the solutions themselves by using IIDM model of empowerment. (Year 2000- .2001).

5.

Empowering RCVs by Creating Awareness for Prevention of HIV/AIDS/STD in Slums of Bhopal Town.

This project was sponsored by MP Aids Control Society with funding support of World Bank & NACO. It aimed at imparting knowledge among resident community volunteers (RCV) to convince their neighbors about safe sex and other preventive measures against HIV/STD & AIDS as peer counselors. This has also empowered the local folk artists in the field who performed number of street plays & performances to create awareness on subjects in their vicinity. This project also facilitated the development of messages by RCVs themselves and also deciding the mode and places of dissemination. (Year 1999-2001).

6.

Empowerment of Women Members of Panchayats through Building Assertiveness at 16 Panchayats in Dist. Harda: -

50 women members of panchayats were empowered through personality development & behavioral therapy using process consultation and other methods of OD Intervention on individuals. This was a multi phase intervention sponsored by ACTION AID INDIA. (Year 1998-1999).

7.

Watershed Development for Milli Watershed:-

Rajiv Gandhi Watershed Development Mission sponsored this project. In the milli watershed at Harda there were 8 micro watersheds. It was a large project aimed at water & soil conservation to increase the agricultural productivity. The project also aimed to empower the women in these 20 villages by training them in economic production activities. Ownership involvement & empowerment were the key interventions for the success of the project. (Year 1997-2001).

8. Designing implementation Strategy for State Population Policy in MP:-

This project was sponsored by Directorate of Public Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of MP The roles of different stake holders were identified and the action points were summarized. The Institute also facilitated to prepare action plans by various sections of the department.

 

Capacity Building Programmes

 

1.

Personality Development & Time Management:-

This programme was organized for the executives & engineers of Narmada Hydroelectric Development Corporation at IIDM Conference Hall. About 50 persons in two batches were trained. The subjects dealt in the programme were Communication Skills, Johari Window, TA, FIRO-B, Problem Solving Skills, Team Building & Conflict Resolution, Time Management etc. (Year 2005).

Training of Trainers Programme for Training of Village Health Committee Members at Block Level:

This programme was organized for district level master trainers comprising of district level officers from Department of Education, Public Health Engineering, Public Health & Family Welfare, Women & Child Development at Gwalior. About 50 persons in two batches were trained. The subjects dealt in the programme were Communication Skills, Training Techniques, Role Clarity & Panchayati Raj Institutions, Health Programmes etc. The hands on experience in training was also given during mock exercises. (Year 2005)

3.

Strategic Planning & Reporting for NGO Executives:-

This programme was organized for the executives of partner NGOs of PACS programme sponsored by DFID and managed by Development Alternatives & Coopers and Price Water House. In this programme the strategic management, proposal development, MIS, monitoring & evaluation, documentation & report writing concepts were dealt by us. This programme was conducted at Taragram, Orchha, district Tikamgarh. It was sponsored by DA under PACS. (Year 2006)

4.

Sensitization of District Level Officers of Development Departments for Training of Village Health Committee Members at Block Level in their district:-

This programme was organized for district level officers from Department of Education, Public Health Engineering, Public Health & Family Welfare, Women & Child Development. at divisional head quarters. These workshops were organized at Gwalior, Indore, Morena, Sagar, Ujjain, Rewa & Bhopal under the chairmanship of respective divisional commissioners. About 250 persons in 9 batches were sensitized. The subjects dealt in the programme were roles & responsibilities of VHC members regarding health and women & child development schemes of the government of MP. The functions of Panchayati Raj Institutions were also presented. This project was sponsored by DANIDA under MP Basic Health System Programme. (Year 2005)

5.

Sensitization of Sarpanch & Up- Sarpanch towards women empowerment & gender disparities:

All the Sarpanch & Up - sarpanchs of district Rajgarh MP were sensitized in one day workshop at all the 6 blocks of the district & About 350 persons were sensitized about gender disparity & women empowerment in their villages in 12 batches. The issues pertaining to gender equity & women empowerment were dealt in this training. This project was sponsored by DANIDA under MP Basic Health System Programme. (Year 2005).

6.

On the Job Training on Managerial Skills Development among district & block level Health Managers at Vidisha & Sehore Districts in MP:

The district programme officers & Block Medical Officers were asked to identify the common problems & factors affecting team approach. The communication skills, motivational techniques, problem solving methods, stores & purchase management, teambuilding interventions were discussed there. The OD Intervention techniques were adopted for managerial capacity building. This project was sponsored by DANIDA under MP Basic Health System Programme. (Year 2005)

Duration: 24 days ( 1 day per fortnight for 6 months in both districts)

   
7.

Capacity Building of Clusters formed by SHGs in Swashakti Project in 9 districts of MP:-

As a result of networking requirements of SHGs the clusters were formed by grouping 10-20 women SHGs under Swashakti Project. But the members of these clusters were found lacking managerial capability & team approach. These gaps were filled up by training interventions designed for this purpose. About 18 such workshops of 4 days duration each were held in all the 9 project districts. The participatory styles of capacity building were used in this assignment. This project was sponsored by MP Women Development Corporation under IFAD sponsored Women Empowerment project. (Year 2006)

8.

Training on Team Building, Communication & Motivation techniques for executives of Steel Tubes of India- Sanoh Dewas MP:-

About 15 executives of the organization were trained at their campus. The participatory style of training was adopted. The follow up visits were also planned to guide on further problems on implementing the action plan prepared by the participants as a part of their learning exercises. This programme was sponsored by Steel Tubes of India- Sanoh Dewas MP. (Year 2006)

9.

Training on Development Models of IIDM at JPSS Pratapgarh UP:-

This programme was sponsored by Jan Priya Sewa Sansthan for their executives & programme managers. About 20 persons were present in the programme. The concepts of MVK model of IIDM, Selective Development Approaches Model of IIDM, Sustainability Assurance Model of IIDM & Exit Strategy in Development Projects were discussed in this programme. The skills of problem solving & preparation of project proposals was also imparted among the senior executives of the organization. (Year 2006)

10.

Capacity Building of Women Members  of PRIs on Women Empowerment & Gender Equity in the District Rajgarh:-

About 650 women were trained about gender disparity & women empowerment in their villages. Problem solving approaches, health schemes & other women related schemes, women rights & writing proposals on health projects were taught to them. The issues pertaining to gender equity & women empowerment were dealt in this training. They were also taught about the problem identification, problem solving & proposal writing. A manual on the subject was also prepared. This project was sponsored by DANIDA under MP Basic Health System Programme. (Year 2005)

Capacity Building of Members of Local Self Governance in Urban Municipalities:-

The capacity building interventions were carried out for the members of the CDS & DUDA workers. The problem solving approach, team building & motivation issues were taken up The course was designed to give delegates a complete and practical introduction to management of local self governance institution. 14.

Training Interventions for Capacity Building of Members of Village Health Committees under PRI (Gram Swaraj) in MP:-

This project was sponsored by DANIDA supported MP Basic Health Project-III. In this project we first prepared the master trainers to train the block level trainers in MP who in turn trained the members of VHCs. The contents for these training programmes were decided by the PMU of DANIDA MPBHSP-III. The district level authorities were sensitized in the workshops at each division under the chairmanship of Divisional Commissioners. The training to VHC members was imparted by second level trainers. The evaluation of these training interventions was also done by IIDM which helped in refining the training strategy. (Year 2004-05).

   
15.

NRF Project:-

This project aimed at training to industrial workers for rehabilitation in various trades under NRF Scheme of Govt. of India in MP. More than 100 persons were trained in the skills such as Welding & Fabrication, Screen-Printing, House Wiring, Motor Winding and Manufacturing Sports Goods such as Shuttle Cocks. 20 women were also trained in manufacturing of Shuttle Cocks. About 50% of the trained persons have got self or wage employment. (Year-1996-1997)

   
16.

PMIUPEP Project:-

Under this project the training interventions for skill up gradation of urban poor below poverty line in Hoshangabad, Itarsi & Nagda were carried out. This project has been sponsored by Ministry of Urban Welfare, Govt. of M.P. In this project the Institute has trained about 70 urban poor at Hoshangabad, 90 at Itarsi & 100 at Nagda for the duration ranging from 3 to 4 months. 75 women were trained in Stitching & Embroidery, Agarbatti Manufacturing Data Entry & Computers. About 30% of the trained persons got self or wage employment. (Year 1996-1997).

1.

      

Human Resources Development Interventions for Managerial Skills Development among district Health Systems at District Vidisha & District Sehore in MP:-

This project was sponsored by DANIDA supported MP Basic Health Systems Project-III. In this project we first assessed the training need for capacity building of the district health managers of Vidisha & Sehore. The problem solving & OD Intervention techniques were used in these interventions. The process consultation & problem solving approaches were extensively used in these interventions. The independent evaluation carried out by management expert found the approach highly effective. The managerial capabilities, motivational & problem solving capacities were developed among the health managers as an outcome of these interventions. Here our approach was IIDM model of empowerment. Our staff has carried out training need assessment, problem diagnosis & then facilitation of process consultation workshops, their documentation & follow up exercises. (Year 2005).

   
2.

Capacity Building of Clusters as Women Empowerment interventions in 9 districts of MP:-

This project was sponsored by IFAD supported MP Mahila Vitta Evam Vikash Nigam. In this project we first assessed the training need for capacity building of the members of the clusters formed by 10 or more SHGs by grouping together in the 9 project districts. The change facilitators were developed by the Institute. The guides/ manuals for change facilitators & background materials for the members of the clusters were also developed by the Institute. The managerial capabilities, motivational & problem solving capacities were developed among the members of the clusters. Their capacity was built by using HRD interventions to manage district & state federations. We have designed the training pedagogy, course material, training aids & finally facilitated the process. The contents were related to managerial capabilities & leadership traits. (Year 2006)

OD Interventions in Soot Mill, Khargone:

This project was on empowering the employees of Soot Mill for problem solving & cost reduction in the plant. The organization climate and motivational levels were assessed first. Then only appropriate behaviour change interventions were proposed. (Year 1997)

Supervisory Skill Development through HRD Intervention in Chhattarpur:-

This project was sponsored by Ministry of Public Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of M.P., under IPP-VI World Bank Project. The project has been sponsored to improve the supervisory skills of Health Supervisors of Sagar & Rewa Divisions of the Department of Public Health & Family, Welfare, Govt. of M.P. OD interventions were carried out to attain these objectives. (Year 1996-1997)

6.

OD Interventions in District Central Cooperative Banks & District Land Development Banks:

This project was sponsored by National Bank of Agriculture & Rural Development (NABARD). The project has been sponsored to improve the performance of the banks. In the first phase of this project the Institute has developed 22 senior managers from NABARD as ODI facilitators. In the second phase along with the trained managers the institute helped carry out OD interventions at district level cooperative banks. (Year 1998).

7.

Interdepartmental Team Building Interventions for Health Department & DUDA at Bhopal:

This project was sponsored by DANLEP. In this project the community organizations developed by DUDA, the Asst. Project Officers of DUDA and the health workers of National Leprosy Eradication Program were involved. All these persons have gone through conflict resolution & team building exercises for working together to eradicate leprosy in the town by 2000 AD. (Year 1999)

Teambuilding Interventions for State Leprosy Cell, Directorate of Public Health & FW, Govt. of MP:-

The members of the state leprosy cell were involved for the OD interventions for improved team approach for effectiveness & efficient outputs. Initially the project aimed to focus at state leprosy cell and letter at district level employees. The project was sponsored by DANIDA MP. (Year 1999)

1.

Design & development of Health Management Information System for Primary & Secondary Health Care Institutions in MP:-

This study was sponsored by Rajiv Gandhi Mission for Community Health, Department of Public Health & Family Welfare, Government of MP. In this study we first carried out systems analysis of present MIS at Sub Health Centre, Primary Health Centre, Community Health Centre, Block PHC, Sub District Hospital, District Hospital & Office of Chief Medical & Health Officer. After the analysis of the present system the MIS was modified & revised HMIS was developed. (Year 2006)

2.

Development of community based MIS for Directorate of Urban Welfare, Govt. of M.P.:

The Management Information System has been developed for the community based organizations from Resident Community Volunteers, NHC, CDS, and DUDA to SUDA level. In this project the Institute has facilitated the design of MIS. Due care has been taken to make the reporting so simple that the uneducated RCV can also provide the information to the higher level. UNICEF sponsored the project. (Year 1998).

1. Project Preparations for Urban RCH Infrastructure Requirement at Jabalpur, Bhopal & Indore: -

This study was sponsored by Department of Public Health and Family Welfare Govt. of MP. It was a rapid assessment study to prepare a base document to carry out detailed study on infrastructure requirement for Urban RCH in these cities. Data were collected from municipal corporations and the infrastructure requirements along with the budgets were estimated. (Year 1999- 2000)

2. Integrating Indian System of Medicine with Directorate of Public Health & Family Welfare:-

This study was sponsored by Department of Medical Education, Govt. of MP to prepare a project proposal for UNDP funding. The data were collected from Directorate of Aurvedic & Unani Medicine and Directorate of Public Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of MP for assessing the scope of involvement of the manpower engaged in Indian System  of Medicine in various national health programmes. The study also focused on the training needs for the manpower deployed with ISM. (Year 1999).

Preparation of Manual /Guidelines for providing Information under RTI for Department of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of MP:-

This project was sponsored by Dept. of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of MP to prepare the manual as a compadium of information to be supplied to the citizen under RTI. The present available systems, procedures and data bank were compiled at one place. This was loaded on departmental website.

Preparation of Training Manual for ANM Training:-

The Department of Health & Family Welfare has planned a refresher course for ANMs of its department. It assigned the Institute to prepare a lucid reference material on subjects frequently referred by ANMs. The Institute prepared a training manual with pictorial/graphical depictions on the common subjects referred by ANMs frequently.

Management Development Programs

The Institute has also carried out number of management development programmes for the employees of L & T, Grasim Industries, IFAD, DANIDA, MP-CON, Directorate of Public Health & FW, MP-Mahila Arthik Vikas Nigam, NABARD, State Cooperative Bank etc. These training programmes were conducted in the following subjects such as Interpersonal Communication, Self Development, Internal Customer Care, TQM, OD Interventions, Management of Change, Supervisory Development, Assertiveness Development, Training of Trainers, Leadership Styles, Rural Development, Medicinal Plants, Behavioural Charge Communication, Development Communication etc.

The series of programme on this topic were conducted at Bhopal where in participants from Department of Health, Govt. of Delhi, Department of Health, Government of Orrisa, Department of Health Govt. of Gujarat & various other organizations participated.

The series of programme on this topic were conducted at Bhopal where in participants from various development projects of Government of MP such as Bhoj Wet Land Project, Water & Land Management Institute, Rural Livelihood Projects & Department of Health, Government of Gujarat & various NGOs participated.
